Our Story
The vision began on a mission trip to Pimentel, Dominican Republic. A group of people, led by Rob Benson went down there to minister to the children and people of the region. The extreme poverty and darkness began to retreat as the light and joy of the Master invaded the lives and hearts of people there. The dream was birthed. This group wanted a place like this at home, a place where people could experience this same light and joy of the Master. A place to rise above their poverty; maybe even their circumstances. Then came the name. . .”Matt’s House”. Why Matt’s House? Because in the Bible, Matthew’s house was the place where Jesus met with hurting, broken, needy, etc. and raised them up or challenged them to rise above their circumstances. He met them where they were, as they were.
On April 1, 2007, a small group of people, many of the same ones from the trip, gathered in the Benson home and began to breathe life into this vision. The Community Connection Center was established in Arbutus, Maryland in November of that year. Our Core Team began to serve the community and also started working with our middle and high school campus life groups.
We started renting the Arbutus Social Club on the 2nd and 4th Sunday’s of every month in April of 2008. We are still active in the community by doing different projects to help out, such as mulching, helping with the Arbutus Arts Festival and such. We are working diligently to cultivate relationships and develop a culture within our community where people could feel at home.
So, like Jesus coming to Matthew’s house in the Bible, we would like for you to find Matt’s House a place where you are accepted, where you are heard, challenged, empowered. . .a place where you can be real, discover your relevance/purpose and experience a truly revolutionary change in your life.
